Gyeonggi-do to Implement 'Animal Protection and Welfare System' Starting November
Expectations for Activation of Installation and Operation of Pet Adoption Centers
[Asia Economy Reporter La Young-cheol] Gyeonggi Province announced on the 10th that "the partial amendment to the provincial Animal Protection Ordinance was approved at the 355th Gyeonggi Provincial Council plenary session on the 22nd of last month and has been officially implemented since the 2nd of this month."
According to the province, the amendment clarified the basis for supporting the establishment of an 'Animal Welfare Plan' to promote animal protection and welfare policies, including prevention of animal cruelty and protection of abandoned animals.
It stipulates the governor's responsibility for securing personnel and budget for the implementation of the Animal Welfare Plan, and specifies that the province can support necessary project expenses within the budget range for mayors, county governors, or organizations to carry out animal protection, management, and welfare tasks.
A new provision regarding the installation and operation of feeding stations for stray cats was added to provide a basis for easier installation of 'stray cat feeding stations' to effectively manage the stray cat population and create a pleasant urban environment.
The provision stipulates that the governor, in consultation with mayors and county governors, can install stray cat feeding stations in small parks and neighborhood parks among living area parks under the 'Act on Urban Parks and Green Areas.'
Additionally, a new basis was created to support the 'installation and operation of companion animal adoption centers' to increase the adoption rate of lost and abandoned animals.
In particular, if mayors or county governors establish companion animal adoption centers, they can receive partial support for necessary expenses within the budget range.
