US Republican Candidate Wins Virginia Governor in 'Democratic Stronghold' (Summary)
Biden Administration Faces Setbacks Ahead of Next Year’s Midterm Elections
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Suhwan] The Republican candidate won the gubernatorial election in Virginia, a state traditionally strong for the Democratic Party in the United States.
According to CNN and Fox News on the 2nd (local time), Glenn Youngkin, the Republican candidate, defeated Terry McAuliffe, the Democratic candidate, in the Virginia gubernatorial election held that day.
Fox News reported that with 99% of the votes counted, Youngkin secured 50.77% of the vote, surpassing McAuliffe (48.54%) and confirming his victory.
Major U.S. media also reported that Youngkin's victory was certain as the vote count reached 98%.
Youngkin is a business executive and political newcomer. During the election period, he received support from former President Donald Trump.
McAuliffe, a politician with close ties to former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, served as Virginia governor from 2014 to 2018.
This election was seen as a proxy battle between President Joe Biden and former President Trump, and it is expected that President Biden will suffer significant political damage.
In the presidential election held a year ago, President Biden had a 10 percentage point higher vote share than Trump in Virginia, so U.S. media have described this election result as a "surprising Republican victory."
Especially with the midterm elections coming up next year, where all House members and one-third of Senators will be elected, the Democratic Party's defeat in the key battleground state of Virginia has raised alarms for the Biden administration.
Former President Barack Obama visited Virginia on the 23rd of last month to give a support speech, but voters still chose the Republican candidate.
This is the first time in 12 years since 2009 that a Republican candidate has been elected governor of Virginia.
Former President Trump, who is strongly hinting at a 2024 presidential run, has reaffirmed his political presence through this Virginia election.
The Republican Party has also gained momentum to expand its support base ahead of next year's midterm elections based on this election result.
This election was the first major local election held since President Biden took office.
Virginia has traditionally been a Democratic stronghold, but this gubernatorial race was extremely close. Analysts suggest that President Biden's declining approval ratings also influenced the election.
Youngkin secured stable support within the Republican Party through Trump's endorsement while targeting independent voters fatigued by Trump-style politics by maintaining an appropriate distance.
In particular, Youngkin's focus on the controversial issue of "Critical Race Theory" in the U.S. education sector was cited as another factor in his election victory.
Critical Race Theory is a theory that racial discrimination is a structural problem, not arising from individual prejudice, but embedded within the legal system of society, creating an environment unfavorable to certain races.
Currently, as the Democratic Party leads efforts to include Critical Race Theory in the compulsory education curriculum, parents have strongly opposed it, arguing that it could restrict academic diversity and freedom of expression.
Additionally, school closures due to the spread of COVID-19 and mandatory mask-wearing policies in schools were also issues that drew dissatisfaction from parent voters.
Fox News stated, "The volatile issues of education and schools led to Youngkin's victory." Indeed, Youngkin said in his victory speech, "I stood with the parents and children of our country."
