[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] "Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a technology that is driving innovation in all fields and making people's lives better."
Seung Hyun-joon, Head (President) of Samsung Research, emphasized this during his keynote speech on the second day of the 'Samsung AI Forum 2021,' held online on the 2nd, stating, "AI is being applied across all research and development (R&D) areas of Samsung Research."
On the same day, Seung introduced Samsung Research's AI technologies by field. These include smartphone cameras that express creativity in new ways, 'on-device' AI that enables conversations with TVs or air conditioners, and robot AI technology that automatically generates indoor 3D maps, recognizes obstacles, and cleans.
The Samsung AI Forum is an annual event hosted by Samsung Electronics to share the current status and prospects of global AI technology. Following the first day hosted by the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology, the second day is organized by Samsung Research to conclude this year's schedule.
On the second day, under the direction of Danieli, Vice President and Head of Samsung Research Global AI Center, participants discuss various topics through real-time panel discussions. A 'Lightning Talk' session is also held, where Samsung Research Global AI Center employees present their ongoing research.
As part of expert lectures, Professor Leslie Valiant from Harvard University addresses the topic "Complementing Supervised Learning with Reasoning." Professor Valiant identifies combining learning and reasoning within a single framework as a challenge to achieve more ambitious AI goals and introduces his research framework called "Robust Logic."
In the following invited session, Professor Felix Heide from Princeton University presents on "Differentiable Cameras," discussing camera image quality technology using deep learning. Kim Bin, Research Scientist at Google Brain, introduces recent achievements and future directions in machine learning methods that explain AI decision-making processes in a human-understandable way under the theme "Interpretability of Machine Learning Models."
In the final session, Professor Max Welling from the University of Amsterdam and Head of Microsoft Research Amsterdam Lab explains "Understanding Materials Using Deep Learning," also introducing opportunities for new scientific discoveries by applying deep learning to molecular-level simulations.
