Under the theme "The Horizon of Korean Sculpture: From Changwon," this exhibition brings together works by masters representing Korean art and sculpture, including Moon Shin, who are from Changwon.
The participating artists in the masters exhibition are Kim Jong-young (1915-1982), Moon Shin (1922-1995), Park Jong-bae (1935-), Park Seok-won (1941-), and Kim Young-won (1947-), masters who left their footprints with unique artistic worlds amid the turbulent history of modern and contemporary Korea during the Japanese colonial period and the war.
Kim Jong-young, known for the "Beauty of Non-Carving (불각, Bukak)," is a sculptor and educator regarded as a pioneer of modern Korean abstract sculpture. His birthplace in Sodap-dong, Changwon, is known as the backdrop of the flower palace appearing in "Spring in My Hometown."
Moon Shin, who will celebrate his 100th birthday next year, is an abstract sculptor who gained international fame in France and other global stages, rising to the ranks of masters. Moon Shin personally established the Changwon Municipal Masan Moon Shin Art Museum, fulfilling his lifelong wish and leaving it to the citizens.
Park Jong-bae made history in Korean art by winning the highest award, the President's Award, at the National Art Exhibition (Gukjeon) in 1965 with his work "Circle of History," marking the first time abstract sculpture was recognized for its aesthetic legitimacy by the Gukjeon system.
Since the late 1960s, he has been based in the United States, actively working across Korea and the U.S.
Park Seok-won showed early prominence in the art world, winning the Speaker of the National Assembly Award consecutively at the Gukjeon since 1968, and around the age of 30, he was listed as a recommended artist of the Gukjeon, which was then considered the highest authority.
Through the series "Jeok (Accumulation)" and "Jeok-ui (Accumulated Intention)," Park Seok-won reached maturity in expressing the ultimate goal of his sculpture, "The Gesture of Nature."
Kim Young-won, familiar to the public as the artist of the King Sejong Statue in Gwanghwamun, began his career based on independent realistic sculpture during the 1960s and 70s when abstract art dominated the art scene. He is a master of Korean figurative sculpture who has developed his artistic world consistently through human body sculpture, a rare approach in Korean sculpture.
This special exhibition was jointly planned with the participation of the Changwon Municipal Masan Moon Shin Art Museum and Sookmyung Women's University Moon Shin Art Museum.
