[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] Samsung Electronics kicked off the 'Samsung AI Forum 2021,' held annually to share the current status and prospects of global artificial intelligence (AI) technology, online on the 1st.
Kim Ki-nam, Vice Chairman and CEO of Samsung Electronics, said in his opening remarks, "The advancement of AI is expanding not only in the electronics industry but also in various fields such as basic science and medicine," adding, "We expect that in the future, AI will provide solutions to social issues like climate change and environmental pollution, but many challenges still remain."
He continued, "As a core technology company in the AI ecosystem, Samsung Electronics aims to engage in discussions with researchers worldwide to address these issues," and added, "We hope this forum will be a meaningful platform for inspiration from distinguished researchers in academia and industry and for discussions on the present and future of AI technology that benefits humanity."
Now in its fifth year, the 'Samsung AI Forum' is a gathering where leading global AI experts share the latest technological trends and research achievements. Over two days until the 2nd, discussions will cover AI research directions that can practically contribute to human life, from fundamental AI research to applications. On the first day, the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology will lead the sessions, and on the second day, Samsung Research will take over. The event is broadcast live on Samsung Electronics' YouTube channel.
During the three technical sessions on this day, topics include ▲ scalable and sustainable AI computing ▲ AI for scientific discovery ▲ and trustworthy computer vision, featuring global scholars, promising AI startups, and Samsung’s research leaders as speakers.
Kunle Olukotun, co-founder of the prominent AI startup SambaNova Systems and a professor at Stanford University, USA, will share insights on "The Future of AI Hardware," focusing on ultra-low-power AI computing through efficient data flow architecture design.
Gerbrand Ceder, a professor at UC Berkeley, USA, will lecture on "The Use of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Materials Research and the Future Laboratory," and Antonio Torralba, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, will speak on "Visual Learning."
From Samsung Electronics, research leaders including Choi Chang-gyu, Executive Vice President and Head of the AI & SW Research Center at the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology, will present Samsung Electronics' current AI research status and vision. They will introduce various AI learning model developments and use cases and propose memory-centric computing architectures such as ultra-low-power AI computing designs for processing large-scale data and AI models.
Samsung Electronics also announced the recipients of this year's 'Samsung AI Researcher Award,' established last year to discover outstanding emerging researchers in the AI field, as well as the results of the 'AI Challenge Competition' held for domestic university (graduate) students.
