US State Department Mourns the Passing of Former President Roh Tae-woo
[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] The U.S. Department of State issued a statement expressing condolences on the passing of former President Roh Tae-woo.
Ned Price, spokesperson for the State Department, stated on the 27th (local time), "We extend our deepest condolences to the Korean people on the passing of former President Roh."
Spokesperson Price said, "Former President Roh left a complex legacy," and evaluated that "his tenure included the consolidation of Korea's democratic traditions, admission to the United Nations, and a strong commitment to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula."
He did not directly mention historical mistakes such as the December 12 Incident and the May 18 Democratic Movement.
Price added, "The ROK-U.S. alliance has continued efforts toward our shared commitments for over 70 years," citing as examples of the joint commitments between the two countries the strengthening of a rules-based international order and multilateral institutions, as well as the promotion of peace, security, and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula and in the Indo-Pacific region.

Former President Roh passed away on the 26th at the age of 89. His funeral will be held as a state funeral on the 30th, but interment in the National Cemetery will not be conducted according to relevant laws.
