[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] LG Electronics is accelerating its transition to renewable energy by introducing a solar power plant at its production factory.
On the 27th, LG Electronics announced that it has built and started operating a solar power plant at its home appliance production factory in Rayong, Thailand. This factory, established in 1997, produces washing machines, air conditioners, and more.
The power plant has a capacity of 4.2 MW and replaces about 20% of the factory's annual electricity consumption. The company explained that this will reduce carbon emissions, equivalent to planting approximately 220,000 trees.
Considering space efficiency, LG Electronics installed about 9,400 solar panels on the building's rooftop. The panel area covers approximately 6,300 pyeong, which is equivalent to the size of three soccer fields.
Previously, LG Electronics set a goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030 and to convert 100% of the energy used in all domestic and overseas business sites to renewable energy by 2050.
Accordingly, the Noida production factory in India, which manufactures washing machines and refrigerators, introduced a 3.2 MW solar power facility last year. The Indian production subsidiary plans to increase the use of renewable energy by partially self-producing energy through the solar facility. The North American subsidiary also plans to convert 100% of the energy used in production, logistics, and offices to renewable energy by the end of this year.
