[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] “He was a president who made the people painfully experience military dictatorship, including the Samcheong Education Corps, seizure of corporate assets, and media suppression.”
Former Jeju Governor and People Power Party presidential primary candidate Won Hee-ryong strongly opposed former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol’s remarks defending former President Chun Doo-hwan, saying, “Many say his politics were good except for the military coup and the May 18 Gwangju incident.”
On the morning of the 20th, at a press conference held at the People Power Party Daegu City Party Office in Suseong-gu, Daegu, former Governor Won pointed out, “Former President Chun Doo-hwan made the people painfully experience what military dictatorship is, not only through the coup and the Gwangju massacre but also through the Samcheong Education Corps, seizure of corporate assets, suppression and control of journalists, and the overall erosion of democracy.”
He added, “No matter how you look at it, it was a serious misstatement and a reckless remark that reveals his shallow historical awareness and perception. I sincerely hope he apologizes to the people with a truly remorseful heart and seriously undergoes a process of correcting his mistaken historical understanding.”
Former Governor Won appeared encouraged by recent public opinion poll results that day.
He said, “Regarding debates and national governance plans, the people have started to see Won Hee-ryong as a viable winning candidate who can have an advantage over Lee Jae-myung.”
This was his response to the factor behind showing an advantage for the first time in a recent poll conducted as a one-on-one contest against former Governor Lee Jae-myung, who was recently selected as the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate.
Former Governor Won said, “Through the fight with Lee Jae-myung, I will do my best to make the people strongly feel that I am the winning candidate for the general election and that I have the determination, inclusiveness, and passionate heart to overcome the villains, anger, and hatred rampant in Korea and bring the country back on the right track.”
He also criticized, “At the last National Assembly inspection by the Administrative and Security Committee, the People Power Party lawmakers performed very poorly. There was a lack of attitude and teamwork strategy among the lawmakers, and they were unprepared in researching and preparing against Lee Jae-myung.”
