According to health authorities and the Seoul Metropolitan Government on the 16th, a total of 1,173 new confirmed COVID-19 cases were reported nationwide from midnight to 6 p.m. This is 133 fewer than the 1,306 cases recorded at the same time the previous day. It is 21 more than the 1,152 cases reported on the 9th of this month, which was a Hangul Day holiday a week ago.
By region, 905 cases (77.2%) were in the metropolitan area, and 268 cases (22.8%) were in non-metropolitan areas. By city and province, there were 446 cases in Seoul, 359 in Gyeonggi, 100 in Incheon, 41 in Chungnam, 39 in Daegu, 36 in Busan, 34 in Chungbuk, 30 in Gyeongnam, 27 in Gyeongbuk, 21 in Gangwon, 11 in Jeonnam, 9 in Jeonbuk, 8 in Daejeon, 6 in Gwangju, 5 in Jeju, and 1 in Ulsan. Among the 17 cities and provinces nationwide, only Sejong reported no confirmed cases.
Considering that there is still time until midnight when the tally closes, the number of new confirmed cases announced as of midnight on the 17th is expected to reach at least the 1,400s. The previous day saw an increase of 312 cases after 6 p.m., closing at 1,618 cases.
The fourth wave of COVID-19 in Korea, which began in early July this year, has continued for over three months. The daily confirmed cases have recorded four digits for 102 consecutive days since July 7, when 1,211 cases were reported.
