First Cold Wave Warning of the Season Nationwide This Fall... Seoul's First October Cold Wave Advisory in 17 Years (Comprehensive)
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Suhwan] On the 16th, a cold wave warning was issued across various parts of the country.
The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) issued a cold wave alert for Yongin and Gwangju in Gyeonggi Province, Nonsan City and Hongseong County in Chungnam Province, Boeun, Goesan, Yeongdong, Eumseong, and Jeungpyeong Counties in Chungbuk Province, and Jinan, Muju, and Jangsu Counties in Jeonbuk Province.
Additionally, a cold wave advisory was issued for most other regions including Seoul, Incheon, Daejeon, Gwangju, Daegu, and Sejong.
Only the southern coast of Gyeongnam including Busan and the eastern coast of Gyeongbuk including Ulsan were excluded from the cold wave warnings.
This cold wave warning will take effect from 9 PM on the same day.
This is the first time in 17 years since 2004 that a cold wave warning has been issued in Seoul during October.
The KMA explained that the cold wave warning period in 2004 included October, and the cold wave warning issued in Seoul on October 1 of that year remains the earliest cold wave warning ever recorded in Seoul.
A cold wave warning is issued when ▲ the morning minimum temperature drops by 15 degrees or more compared to the previous day, falling to 3 degrees Celsius or below and expected to be 3 degrees lower than the average ▲ the morning minimum temperature is expected to remain at or below -15 degrees Celsius for two or more consecutive days ▲ or when a sudden cold snap is expected to cause significant damage over a wide area.
A cold wave advisory is issued when ▲ the morning minimum temperature drops by 10 degrees or more compared to the previous day, falling to 3 degrees Celsius or below and expected to be 3 degrees lower than the average ▲ the morning minimum temperature is expected to remain at or below -12 degrees Celsius for two or more consecutive days ▲ or when a sudden cold snap is expected to cause significant damage.
According to the KMA, the morning minimum temperature on this day remained around 12 degrees Celsius.
The daytime maximum temperature is also expected to range between 11 and 20 degrees Celsius.
This means the daytime temperature dropped by more than 5 degrees compared to the previous day.
It is also lower than the average (minimum 5.2~14.3 degrees Celsius, maximum 19.0~22.6 degrees Celsius).
On Sunday the 17th, it will be colder than the 16th, with morning temperatures dropping below freezing mainly in inland areas such as Daegwallyeong and Cheorwon.
The forecast for the 17th predicts minimum temperatures of -3 to 7 degrees Celsius and maximum temperatures of 10 to 16 degrees Celsius.
In Seoul, the minimum temperature on the 17th is expected to be 0 degrees Celsius, marking the third lowest minimum temperature for mid-October.
The last time the minimum temperature in mid-October in Seoul was below 0 degrees Celsius was on October 19, 1957, when it was -0.4 degrees Celsius.
This cold spell will peak on the mornings of the 17th and 18th, briefly ease on the morning of the 19th, and then continue again.
