Will the Level 4 Autonomous Vehicle Era Open... Government Listens to Opinions from Industry Including KT
Development of Autonomous Driving Technology Based on 5G Mobile Communication
[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] As the development of vehicle communication (V2X) technology using 5G technology is rapidly progressing, the government has arranged a meeting to listen to industry opinions.
The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 14th that it visited the KT Research and Development Center to listen to difficulties faced by companies developing autonomous driving technology based on 5G mobile communication and to communicate on-site.
This event is a follow-up measure after consultations with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport on vehicle communication methods on August 26. It was organized to share the results of existing achievements, check the preparation status for cellular-based vehicle-to-everything communication (C-V2X) technology verification, and gather opinions from industry and experts regarding 5G-NR-V2X technology development.
At the meeting, KT connected three local governments participating in technology development?Seoul Sangam, Gyeonggi Pangyo, and Daegu Suseong?to demonstrate the 5G-V2X traffic control platform, LiDAR-based intelligent intersections, and on-demand remote driving services.
The meeting reviewed the progress of communication method technology verification, including the formation of a next-generation cooperative intelligent transport system (C-ITS) joint working group, installation of autonomous driving infrastructure for a demonstration project connecting Daejeon and Sejong, real-road testing, and derivation of demonstration results. Discussions were held on technology development status, international trends, and other autonomous driving-related issues.
Companies plan to cooperate to revitalize the convergence ecosystem between the mobile communication and automotive industries. They also intend to participate in the joint working group for unifying next-generation C-ITS communication methods. Currently, there are two methods: the Wi-Fi-based WAVE and the mobile communication-based C-V2X.
The Ministry of Science and ICT will reflect the opinions gathered at this meeting in related policy formulation and promote the development of 5G autonomous driving technologies and localization of parts and terminals that have high import dependence. To link demand for developed products, cooperation between large and small-to-medium enterprises will also be strengthened.
