Hapcheon County Council Opens Temporary Session... Issues Statement Opposing Clean Energy Power Complex Demonstration
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] The Hapcheon County Council in Gyeongnam opened the 258th extraordinary session on the 13th and began a 10-day meeting period.
During this extraordinary session, the council will deliberate and approve 15 various agenda items, including the "Partial Amendment to the Ordinance on Priority Purchase of Local Products and Support for Small and Medium-sized Merchants in Hapcheon County," proposed by Councilor Kwon Young-sik, and the "Ordinance on the Promotion of Private Museums and Art Galleries in Hapcheon County," submitted by the Hapcheon County Governor.
At the opening of the session, the council also issued a statement regarding the protest against the Hapcheon Clean Energy Convergence Power Complex.
The council expressed sympathy for the public officials who suffered from the throwing of human waste, inhumane insults, and verbal abuse by the protest committee during the extreme confrontation between the Power Complex Opposition Committee and Hapcheon County.
It added, "The executive branch's efforts were insufficient to resolve the conflicts among residents," and apologized, saying, "The county council also feels a heavy responsibility for the lack of efforts to mediate and resolve the confrontation between both sides."
Furthermore, it proposed, "The Opposition Committee should immediately apologize to the residents and the affected public officials, and Hapcheon County must concentrate all administrative power on communication with residents to do its best to build consensus."

Chairperson Bae Mong-hee, in her opening remarks, said, "We feel regret and a heavy sense of responsibility as the representative body of the residents regarding the protest on the 30th of last month," but emphasized, "Violence and illegal protests that trample on human dignity cannot be tolerated under any circumstances."
