Jeon Hae-cheol Visits Mokpo's 'Gwaenchanha Village'... Youth Settlement Meeting in the Region
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] A meeting was held to discuss various ways to revitalize local communities by meeting young people who are bringing new energy to the regions.
On the 8th, Jeon Hae-cheol, Minister of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, visited Mokpo's "Gwaenchana Village," a leading case of the "Youth Village Project," and held a roundtable to exchange opinions with young people. Started in 2018 as part of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's "Citizen Participation Space Activation Project," Mokpo's "Gwaenchana Village" was promoted to provide new life opportunities for young people and to regenerate the declining old downtown area.
The "Youth Village Project" is a policy that provides young people with opportunities to stay in the region for a certain period and supports them to take root in the community through local experiences and entrepreneurship education. Since 2018, one pilot site has been established each year, including Mokpo's "Gwaenchana Village" in Jeollanam-do, Seocheon-gun's "Life Skills School" in Chungcheongnam-do in 2019, and Mungyeong's "Moonlight Exploration Team" in Gyeongsangbuk-do in 2020. This year, the number has been significantly expanded to 12 locations.
Minister Jeon personally visited Mokpo's "Gwaenchana Village" to check the project status and held a roundtable with young people settled in the region. At the meeting, he listened attentively to their impressions, difficulties, and suggestions as they settled in the region after coming down from metropolitan areas and other cities.
