This event was organized to commemorate Senior Citizens' Day, established on October 2, 1997, to promote the spirit of respect for the elderly and to honor the efforts of seniors who have preserved and developed traditional culture.
The ceremony, marking its 25th anniversary this year, was attended by Ha Byung-pil, Acting Governor of Gyeongnam Province, Kim Ha-yong, Chairman of the Provincial Council, Shin Hee-beom, President of the Korea Senior Citizens Association Gyeongsangnam-do Federation, and officials from the Senior Citizens Association. The program included the reading of the Senior Citizens' Charter and the Senior Citizens' Pledge, followed by awards for meritorious service.
Ten representatives, including senior citizen Kim Sang-gap, who were recognized for their dedication to the local community and the promotion of senior welfare, received awards.
Due to COVID-19 prevention measures, attendance was minimized, and awardees who could not attend the ceremony will receive their awards in their respective cities and counties.
Acting Governor Ha expressed gratitude to the seniors, saying, "The Republic of Korea's advancement into the ranks of developed countries and its emergence as a cultural powerhouse were made possible by the sacrifice and dedication of our elders."
