Gwangju Nam-gu Selected for 'Renewable Energy Convergence Project' Four Consecutive Times
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Nam-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (District Mayor Kim Byung-nae) is making every effort to increase the self-sufficiency rate of renewable energy.
Nam-gu has been selected for the government-led ‘Renewable Energy Convergence Support Project’ for four consecutive years and plans to accelerate the establishment of a one-household-one-power-plant project on vacant land of houses and commercial buildings, aiming to achieve a 50% renewable energy self-sufficiency rate by 2030.
Nam-gu secured 3.4 billion KRW in project funds through the ‘2022 Renewable Energy Convergence Support Project’ contest recently conducted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
Accordingly, starting next year, the project funds will be used to accelerate the installation of solar power and solar thermal facilities targeting houses and commercial buildings in Yangnim-dong, Sajik-dong, Wolsan-dong, and Baegun 1·2-dong.
The reason for promoting this project is to realize energy equitable development by distributing renewable energy to energy-vulnerable groups living in the old downtown area where urban regeneration projects are underway.
To this end, Nam-gu plans to install 1.7MW-class solar power generation facilities at 471 locations using rooftops and vacant land of buildings located in five old downtown neighborhoods, and also distribute solar thermal hot water supply facilities to 47 locations.
In the case of solar power generation facilities, 3kW-class facilities that can reduce electricity bills by 70-100% per month will be supplied to houses, and 5-49kW-class facilities are expected to be provided to commercial buildings.
Also, solar thermal hot water supply facilities will be installed in households using energy such as city gas for hot water use, which is expected to reduce energy usage fees by up to 40%.
A Nam-gu official stated, “To achieve a 50% renewable energy self-sufficiency rate by 2030, we will continue to expand the renewable energy distribution project. We will do our best in the one-household-one-power-plant project so that all residents in the district can enjoy the welfare benefits of renewable energy.”
Meanwhile, since 2019, Nam-gu has been continuously selected for government-led contest projects, investing 7.4 billion KRW in seven neighborhoods including Daechon-dong, Songam-dong, Hyodeok-dong, Wolsan 4·5-dong, and Juwol 1·2-dong, installing solar power and solar thermal generation facilities at 972 locations.
