[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] On the 7th, Choi Jong-geon, First Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, held a phone call with Robert Malley, U.S. Special Envoy for Iran, exchanging views on current issues related to the restoration negotiations of the Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA).
Special Envoy Malley shared the situation regarding the JCPOA restoration negotiations and requested that South Korea continue to play a constructive role. In response, Vice Minister Choi stated that considering the importance of South Korea-Iran relations, diplomatic support for the resumption of JCPOA restoration negotiations will be continuously provided.

The JCPOA is an agreement in which Iran halts nuclear development in exchange for the international community lifting sanctions against Iran. Previously, President Trump withdrew from the JCPOA in 2018 and reinstated sanctions on Iran. The Biden administration has expressed its intention to restore the JCPOA, and Iran has also announced its policy to restore the JCPOA next month on the condition of releasing frozen assets.
