LG Electronics Supplies 'Car's Eye' ADAS Front Camera to Mercedes-Benz C-Class
Application of Proprietary Algorithm Developed by VS Business Division
Supplying Parts to Premium Automakers... Diversifying Business Portfolio
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyewon] LG Electronics has succeeded in applying an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) front camera, which serves as the 'eyes' of a vehicle, to global automakers, alongside developing the ADAS front camera. LG Electronics plans to accelerate the diversification of its automotive electronics business portfolio by securing additional customers for ADAS front camera components.
On the 6th, LG Electronics announced that it has begun full-scale mass production by applying the ADAS front camera jointly developed with German automaker Daimler AG to the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Although LG Electronics has previously supplied other parts (in-vehicle touchscreens) to Daimler, this is the first time the company has applied an ADAS front camera to a global automaker.
This camera applies an algorithm independently developed by the VS Business Division and provides functions such as ▲Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) ▲Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) ▲Lane Departure Warning (LDW) ▲Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) ▲Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR) ▲Intelligent Headlight Control (IHC). Notably, AEB and LDW are mandatory features that will be required on all vehicles released from next year in countries including the United States and Germany.
The vehicle identifies all moving or stationary objects around it through the camera and activates the AEB function to stop itself if there is a risk of collision. The LKA and LDW functions prevent the driver from leaving the lane, and ACC maintains a safe distance from other vehicles. TSR recognizes traffic signs and signals along the driving route and guides the driver to adjust speed or stop accordingly. IHC automatically adjusts the brightness and position of the high beams during nighttime driving to avoid disturbing the vision of oncoming drivers.
The ADAS front camera reflects LG Electronics' expertise and technology in mobile communications, connectivity, and image recognition. Through advanced artificial intelligence and deep learning technologies, it can respond to road and traffic conditions in real time.
LG Electronics expects that the ADAS front camera, developed in collaboration with Daimler from the development stage, will contribute to enhancing the safety of Mercedes-Benz C-Class vehicles. Furthermore, based on this mass production experience, the company plans to diversify its automotive electronics business portfolio.
Earlier, LG Electronics' ADAS front camera received the international standard certification 'ISO 26262 Functional Safety Product' from the global testing and certification organization TUV Rheinland in May. This is the first time a core autonomous driving component has received this certification from the institution.
