Jeongeup City Museum to Exhibit Artifacts Related to 'Mongryeon Kim Jinmin' Starting from the 28th
[Jeongeup=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Jaegil] Jeongeup City Museum in Jeollabuk-do announced on the 24th that it will publicly exhibit artifacts related to the calligrapher "Mongryeon Kim Jinmin," who was born in Taein, Jeongeup, from the 28th of this month to December 12th.
This exhibition, held in Exhibition Room 2 on the first floor of Jeongeup City Museum, will showcase 16 pieces from 14 items, including the 10-panel folding screen "Nakjiron (樂志論)" written by Kim Jinmin at the age of 21 (in 1933).
Since 2019, the city has been continuously collecting artifacts related to Mongryeon Kim Jinmin, and this public exhibition was planned based on the achievements so far.
Kim Jinmin's Nakjiron means "a methodology for joyfully carrying out great ambitions" and is a 10-panel folding screen featuring famous poems by Zhong Changtong (仲長統, 179?220), a scholar from the Later Han Dynasty in China.
Professor Emeritus Kim Byunggi of Jeonbuk National University evaluated this work as "a masterpiece consisting of 10 panels, representing the solid brushstrokes, diverse compositions, and the overall harmony and structure of Kim Jinmin's calligraphy, making it one of his representative works."
In addition, the exhibition features Kim Jinmin's calligraphy works held at the Gunsan History Museum and Daejeon University Museum from the Japanese colonial period, as well as the 4th (1925) and 8th (1929) Joseon Art Exhibition 4th prize and special selection award certificates, and the catalogs of the 7th to 9th and 10th Joseon Art Exhibitions containing Kim Jinmin's calligraphy works.
Kim Jinmin was born in 1912 in Taein-myeon, Jeongeup, as the only daughter of Kim Sugon (金水坤) from Gasan (迦山).
From the age of 9, encouraged by her father, she learned calligraphy from Kim Donhee (金敦熙), and by the age of 11, she was skilled enough to write the signboards for Bulgapsa Temple in Yeonggwang, Jeollanam-do, and Uhwaru Pavilion at Baekyangsa Temple in Jangseong.
At age 12, in 1924, she gained recognition as a calligrapher by becoming the youngest to be selected at the 3rd Joseon Art Exhibition.
Among the total of 16 works she presented until 1931, five were awarded special selections, marking her as a promising calligrapher.
Currently, Kim Jinmin's calligraphy can be found on signboards and steles at various temples, including the Chilseonggak (Seven Stars Pavilion) signboard and couplets at Jeongtosa Temple in Jeongeup, the Daejabojon (Great Compassion Treasure Hall) at Geumsansa Temple in Gimje, the Nahanjeon (Arhat Hall) at Wibongsa Temple in Wanju, and the Gwaneumjeon (Avalokitesvara Hall) at Jeonghyesa Temple in Yesan, Chungnam.
Mayor Yoo Jinseop said, "Every year, the city collects and exhibits various artifacts that preserve the history of Jeongeup. We will continue to widely promote historical figures of Jeongeup to enhance citizens' pride and identity and transform this into a driving force for the development of Jeongeup's historical culture."
Meanwhile, the exhibition is open daily from Tuesday to Sunday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., except on Mondays when the museum is closed.
