[Suncheon=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Suncheon City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Heo Seok) announced on the 23rd that it will hold the "21st Nam Seung-ryong Marathon" in November as a non-face-to-face marathon event to overcome COVID-19.
The 21st Nam Seung-ryong Marathon will be held for 15 days from November 13 to 28, where participants can run a half marathon, 10km, or 5km at their preferred time and place.
Since the event is held in a non-face-to-face format, the full course will not be operated for the safety of participants.
Participants will measure their race records using GPS (running app) that can record their movement routes during the event period, and then complete certification by posting their records and proof photos of participation on the event website.
Applications can be made through the Nam Seung-ryong Marathon website until the first 5,000 applicants are reached, and the participation fee is 20,000 KRW per person.
Participants will receive souvenirs such as a smartwatch, mask, and commemorative medal.
Now in its 21st year, the Suncheon Nam Seung-ryong Marathon commemorates the achievements of the late Nam Seung-ryong, a native of Suncheon who won a bronze medal at the 1936 Berlin Olympics and demonstrated the spirit of the Korean people suppressed during the Japanese colonial period to the world.
Meanwhile, although the Nam Seung-ryong Marathon Organizing Committee has held twenty events so far, this event is the first to be held after incorporating the committee into the Suncheon City Sports Council.
The Suncheon City Sports Council stated, "Although this is an untact event, we will honor the spirit of Nam Seung-ryong the marathoner and promote the Nam Seung-ryong Marathon and Suncheon City nationwide," adding, "We will thoroughly prepare to hold the event normally next year in a road race format."
