Apple Develops Technology to Diagnose Depression Using iPhone
[Asia Economy Reporter Yujin Cho] On the 22nd (local time), the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported, citing sources familiar with the matter, that Apple is developing technology to detect depression and cognitive impairment using the iPhone.
This technology utilizes a series of sensors to detect physical abnormalities by analyzing iPhone users' movements, physical activity, sleep patterns, and typing habits. WSJ reported that Apple is considering integrating this as a unique feature of the iPhone.
This effort originated from the research partnerships "Seabreeze" and "Pi," jointly announced with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and pharmaceutical company Biogen.
Biogen is a pharmaceutical company that received FDA approval this summer for a new drug treating mild cognitive impairment.
Until now, Apple's health-related research has mainly focused on the smartwatch, but WSJ reported that the research focus is now shifting to the iPhone as well.
However, sources said that this technology development is still in its early stages, and it is uncertain whether it will be integrated as a default iPhone feature.
Previous studies suggested that handling of digital devices changes when mental health issues arise, but reliable results have not been produced.
Earlier, Apple also conducted research with Duke University using the iPhone camera to diagnose autism in children.
Although still in the early stages, Apple's Chief Operating Officer (COO) Jeff Williams reportedly mentioned to employees the potential to detect and treat brain disorders such as depression and anxiety.
If Apple develops technology to diagnose symptoms, it could improve the mental health of tens of millions worldwide, but privacy concerns remain an issue to be resolved.
Accordingly, WSJ explained that Apple is considering a method that does not send user information to Apple's servers.
