Korea Ranks 4th Overall at the International Earth Science Olympiad
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-su] The Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity announced on the 12th that the South Korean delegation students achieved 4th place overall among countries at the 14th International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO), which was recently held online.
With 206 students from 32 countries participating, this competition was conducted by awarding Excellent, Very Good, and Good ratings to outstanding participants instead of the traditional medals (gold, silver, bronze). The exam was divided into two parts: the ‘DMT (Data Mining Test)’, a written test utilizing big data, and the ‘NTFI (National Team Field Investigation)’, an English oral presentation test on outdoor geological field investigation.
In the DMT category, South Korea’s Kim Geum-min (3rd year, Incheon Science High School) received an ‘Excellent’ rating, placing in the top 15%. Additionally, Kim Bo-min (3rd year, Gyeongnam Science High School), Kim Se-jin (3rd year, Seoul Myeongdeok High School), Lee Seon-ho (3rd year, Changwon Science High School), and Jeong Dong-wook (3rd year, Gyeonggi Buk Science High School) earned ‘Very Good’ ratings. Following them, Kim Min-seo (3rd year, Gwangju Science High School), Moon Ji-wook (2nd year, Jangyu High School), and Yang Jae-hyuk (2nd year, Jeju Science High School) received ‘Good’ ratings, marking a remarkable achievement with all eight members of the Korean delegation receiving awards.
In the NTFI category, where representatives from each country formed teams of two to give oral presentations on outdoor geological field investigations, South Korea won two ‘Very Good’ and two ‘Good’ awards.
