French President Emmanuel Macron posted on Twitter a video showing the American flag raised in front of the ?lys?e Palace, writing in French and English, "We will never forget. We will always fight for freedom."
Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom expressed her condolences in a message to U.S. President Joe Biden, praying for the rescue workers who carried out their duties at the accident site, the victims, survivors, and the affected families.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson stated in a statement released the previous day, "Terrorists have not succeeded in dividing our nations, making us abandon our values, or forcing us to live in perpetual fear."
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison also emphasized that the 9/11 attacks were "an assault targeting our way of life and the values of liberal democracy, but they failed to break our resolve or change our way of life."
German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned that "although we have been able to defeat terrorism that threatens our security, we have not yet achieved all our goals," maintaining vigilance.
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, remembered those who died 20 years ago on this day and those who risked everything to help them, saying, "Even in the darkest and most difficult times, human nature shone through."
Charles Michel, President of the European Council, wrote on Twitter, "We remember the noble sacrifice and dedication of countless emergency responders," adding, "The EU stands with the United States and its President in continuing to fight terrorism and all forms of extremism."
