Continued Infections Among Foreigners and Entertainment Venues... 11 Confirmed Cases in Gwangju on the 10th
One Merchant at Seogu Agricultural and Marine Products Distribution Center Infected... Concerns Over Potential Spread Trigger
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Cho Hyung-joo] In the Gwangju area, coronavirus disease (COVID-19) infections are continuing in a chain among foreigners, entertainment establishments, and students, spreading to family members, acquaintances, and coworkers.
According to Gwangju Metropolitan City on the 10th, as of 2 p.m. that day, 11 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed, classified as numbers 4393 to 4403. Among the total cumulative 4,403 cases, 340 are currently in isolation and treatment.
There are 3 cases related to workplaces employing foreigners (4396, 4401, 4402), 1 case related to confirmed patients from other cities/provinces (4397), 5 cases related to previously confirmed patients including 4 in isolation (4393, 4394, 4400, 4395, 4399), and 2 cases (4398, 4403) currently under investigation for infection routes due to symptomatic testing.
Three additional cases were confirmed through proactive testing of foreigners, bringing the total number of confirmed cases among family members, acquaintances, and coworkers through such testing to 227.
Three more cases (4393, 4394, 4400) related to entertainment establishments were also added. These individuals are coworkers and acquaintances of case number 4188, who was confirmed infected on the 2nd at an entertainment establishment in Seo-gu, and they were under self-quarantine.
Case number 4397, a family member of case 1158 in Gyeyang-gu, Incheon, is known to be a merchant at the Seo-gu Agricultural and Marine Products Distribution Center. The health authorities first conducted diagnostic tests targeting market merchants and are currently identifying citizen contacts based on CCTV footage and other evidence.
The 27th COVID-19 death in the Gwangju area also occurred. Case number 3795, a person in their 90s who was confirmed positive on the 19th of last month, died around 4 p.m. the previous day.
The first COVID-19 death in Gwangju was reported on July 16 of last year, and the 26th death occurred on the 8th of this month.
Meanwhile, as the Chuseok holiday approaches in 10 days, health authorities have decided to partially relax visitation rules at elderly care facilities and elderly residential welfare facilities during the holiday period, reflecting trends in breakthrough infection rates.
From the 13th to the 26th, for two weeks, only those who have completed vaccination will be allowed to visit in single rooms or independent spaces, and non-contact visits will be permitted.
Recent case statistics by type are as follows: 165 cases related to testing of foreigners in Gwangsan-gu (17 at religious facilities, 113 residents, 35 at a logistics center in Gwangsan-gu), 62 cases at workplaces employing foreigners, 15 cases at medical institutions in Dong-gu, 19 cases at medical institutions in Gwangsan-gu, 14 cases from acquaintances’ gatherings in Buk-gu, 35 cases at an insurance company in Seo-gu, 19 cases from family gatherings in Seo-gu, and 25 cases at a middle school in Buk-gu.
