Hong Jun-pyo "It's Time to Consider Transitioning to a Volunteer and Enlistment System"
Lee Jae-myung "Will Change the World That Does Not Respect Citizens in Military Uniform"
[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] Presidential candidates from both ruling and opposition parties expressed their determination to resolve issues such as harsh treatment within the military after watching the Netflix drama ‘D.P.’. Hong Joon-pyo, the People Power Party’s presidential candidate, promised liberation from the burden of conscription, while Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate and Governor of Gyeonggi Province, pledged to clear the barbaric history.
On the 6th, Hong stated on social networking service (SNS), "I watched the drama D.P. on Netflix," adding, "It is a drama dealing with harsh treatment in the military. Although it is fiction, it cannot be said that harsh treatment in the military no longer exists." He recalled, "I experienced 1 year and 6 months of defense duty in a military unit," and said, "The harsh treatment by senior soldiers was very severe even then."
He said, "It is truly heartbreaking that our young people suffer such things in the military, which they joined to protect the country," and explained, "To build a strong army capable of fighting one against a hundred, I pledged to consider transitioning to an all-volunteer and support soldier system. I made such a pledge because I believe it is time to free young people from the burden of conscription."
Lee also shared on SNS, "After finishing my schedule, I watched six episodes in one go," and expressed, "As you know, I could not serve in the military due to an industrial accident. However, it is no different from what I experienced daily in factories decades ago." He pointed out, "The difference is that my experience was 40 years ago, while the drama is set just a few years ago."

He said, "I will definitely change the military that must endure humiliation and injustice, and the world that does not respect citizens in uniform," adding, "I will show it through one action rather than a hundred words."
