Yeosu City Council, Strong Response to Gyeongdo Residential Lodging Facilities
Request for National Audit and Scheduled Meeting Request with Chairman Park Hyun-joo
[Yeosu=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Sim Kyung-taek] The Yeosu City Council in Jeollanam-do has announced a strong response, including requesting a national audit and demanding a meeting with Chairman Park Hyun-joo, regarding Mirae Asset's insistence on constructing a lifestyle accommodation facility in Gyeongdo.
On the 30th of last month, 11 Yeosu city council members, including Chairman Jeon Chang-gon, visited the Gwangyang Bay Area Free Economic Zone Authority in protest, demanding the withdrawal of the construction of the lifestyle accommodation facility in Gyeongdo, which damages the natural landscape and promotes real estate speculation.
According to the city council, Mirae Asset submitted a building permit application recently after conditionally passing the review by the Jeollanam-do Architectural Landscape Joint Deliberation Committee in July.
Regarding the committee's request to reduce the number of floors and scale to preserve Gyeongdo's terrain and alleviate the sense of enclosure, the application was submitted with minor adjustments, including partial modification of the two buildings' floors and a reduction of 13 rooms from 1,184 to 1,171 rooms.
The council members first pointed out the insufficient efforts by the Economic Zone Authority to negotiate the modification of the lifestyle accommodation facility's construction scale. They argued that the Economic Zone Authority should have actively consulted with Yeosu City and others to adjust the building scale according to the committee's conditional resolution.
There were also complaints that the Economic Zone Authority only represented the business operator's position and should listen to the opinions of Yeosu citizens. Voices urging institutional improvements were raised to ensure that in matters directly related to citizens' lives, not only the city government but also the city council's opinions are heard in the future.
The city council announced additional measures following the meeting with the Economic Zone Authority. First, at the 213th extraordinary session opening on the 7th, they plan to submit a resolution requesting a national audit on the construction of the Gyeongdo lifestyle accommodation facility. Alongside this, they intend to pursue a meeting with Mirae Asset Group Chairman Park Hyun-joo.
Lee Sang-woo, Chair of the Council Operations Committee, stated, "Despite local concerns, Mirae Asset is trying to push forward with the construction of the lifestyle accommodation facility," and added, "The city council will do everything possible to ensure the demands of Yeosu citizens are realized."
