Kim Yong-jin, Chairman of the National Pension Service, "Will apply responsible investment principles to all fund assets"
[Asia Economy Reporter Song Seung-seop] The National Pension Service (NPS) plans to apply the principles of long-term responsible investment to all fund assets. Additionally, ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) evaluation factors will be incorporated into overseas stocks and bonds.
Kim Yong-jin, Chairman of the National Pension Service, stated in a keynote speech at the ‘World Economy Institute-Shinhan Financial Group International Conference’ held on the 2nd at Lotte Hotel in Sogong-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul, “The NPS has set the basic direction to apply responsible investment to the entire fund assets in the long term.”
He added, “We plan to apply an integrated strategy that incorporates ESG factors into the financial analysis process for domestic and overseas stocks and bonds,” emphasizing, “The scope of related report submissions will be expanded to include all domestic entrusted companies.”
He also explained, “Various monitoring activities will be conducted, and when securities firms or asset management companies prepare operation reports, non-financial factors will also be included.” The ESG evaluation system will be improved and implemented within this year.
He mentioned that ESG-related responsible activities will also be strengthened. Chairman Kim said, “The NPS’s responsible investment is conducted based on the stewardship responsibility guidelines, with the purpose of activating non-financial factors,” and added, “We will additionally select environmental and social matters as key management areas.”
Regarding overseas stocks and bonds, he announced, “We will establish selection criteria,” and stated, “Going forward, ESG factors will be reflected in overseas stocks and bonds, and we will actively engage in dialogue with overseas companies.”

He concluded, “The goal is not to increase corporate uncertainty but to proactively present the basic direction of the NPS and interact so that ESG investment can successfully take root in society.”
