The national location number plates were installed on the Myeongsagaetgil trail in Sinji-myeon, which does not have road name addresses, and are expected to help ensure the safety of residents and tourists visiting Myeongsagaetgil.
The national location number system divides the entire national territory into grids of 100 km, 1 km, 100 m, and 10 m, marking the location with coordinate concepts and assigning numbers to those points. It is a nationwide location-finding number system.
In particular, in emergency situations or disaster accidents occurring on hiking trails or coastal areas without road name addresses, calling 119 and providing the letters and numbers displayed on the national location number plate or scanning the QR code with a smartphone allows confirmation of the current location and fire station number, enabling the reporting of the distress location.
Since 2014, Wando-gun has installed 187 national location number plates on hiking trails such as Sangwangsan and Seomangsan and coastal areas (as of August 2021), installing them on hiking trail signboards, transmission towers, and check dams to provide convenience to hikers and tourists and to respond to distress and emergency situations.
A county official stated, “We will continue to expand and manage the national location number plates to ensure the safety of residents,” and added, “We hope that the national location number plates will be utilized in emergency situations in areas without buildings and roads such as mountains, trails, and rivers.”
