Samsung Bio Begins Production of Moderna Vaccine Prototype... Government "Ongoing Discussions for Domestic Supply"
[Asia Economy Reporter Seo So-jung] The government announced that it is continuously discussing the domestic use plan for the Moderna vaccines manufactured under contract by Samsung Biologics.
At the regular briefing on the 1st, Lee Ki-il, the 1st Controller of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, responded to inquiries regarding the domestic use of Moderna vaccines produced by Samsung Biologics, stating, "We have requested Moderna and Samsung Biologics several times that it would be preferable for the vaccines to come from domestic production rather than from other countries, but no decision has been made yet."
Lee added, "I understand that Samsung Biologics has started producing prototypes and that various procedures are currently underway," and said, "Once the safety and efficacy of the products produced by Samsung Biologics are verified, the vaccination schedule can be set."
Samsung Biologics began prototype production at the end of August, and after quality control by Moderna and domestic regulatory authorities, it plans to start producing hundreds of millions of doses of the Moderna vaccine from the third quarter of this year.
