By establishing Atlas Air’s global transportation network, which connects over 430 airports in 124 countries worldwide, at Incheon Airport, it is evaluated that South Korea has laid the groundwork to emerge as a key logistics hub in Asia.
According to the aviation industry on the 30th, Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, Atlas Air, and Sharp Technics K have signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a joint venture to directly construct an aircraft MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) facility within Incheon Airport.
The joint venture between Atlas Air and Sharp Technics K plans to initially build one facility with 2.5 bays (1 bay accommodates one large aircraft) for large aircraft, which is scheduled to begin full operation in early 2025. Considering the increasing maintenance demand and market environment, an additional 2.5-bay facility for large aircraft will be constructed and operated sequentially in the future.
With the attraction of Atlas Air’s directly operated maintenance facility, Incheon Airport will provide an integrated one-stop service linking air cargo transportation and freighter maintenance. Maintenance volumes for the Asian region, which had previously been handled in Singapore and Hong Kong, can now be processed directly at Incheon Airport.
The dedicated maintenance facility for Atlas Air’s express cargo aircraft at Incheon Airport will provide customized maintenance services for aircraft owned or leased by Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings and third-party consigned cargo aircraft. All maintenance volumes, currently handled overseas, will be brought to Incheon Airport’s directly operated maintenance facility for servicing before being exported abroad.
