Songpa-gu (Mayor Park Sung-soo) has embarked on finding ways to improve the water quality of Seokchon Lake, the ‘resting place for 10 million Seoul citizens.’
On the 30th at 2 p.m., Songpa-gu held a ‘Public-Private Cooperation Agreement Ceremony for Seokchon Lake Water Quality Improvement’ at the Dongho waterfront stage of Seokchon Lake. The agreement was signed by Songpa-gu Office, Lotte, Korea Environment Corporation, and JENS Co., Ltd.
The four organizations plan to find ways to improve the water quality of Seokchon Lake, which has experienced green algae blooms in summer, through mutual cooperation and to enhance residents’ quality of life.
According to the agreement, Songpa-gu will support administration for water quality and turbidity improvement and provide basic data. Lotte will support on-site operations such as providing basic information and convenience at Seokchon Lake. Korea Environment Corporation will handle water quality monitoring and technical advisory support. JENS Co., Ltd. will perform practical work for water quality and turbidity improvement and collect water quality data.
After the agreement ceremony, the heads of the four organizations demonstrated water purification work by boarding a boat on-site and injecting eco-friendly chemicals to remove water pollutants.
Park Sung-soo, Mayor of Songpa-gu, emphasized, “The Seokchon Lake water quality improvement project is one of the foundational tasks to make Seokchon Lake the cultural tourism center of Songpa-gu.” He added, “We will manage Seokchon Lake, the only natural lake in Seoul, well to improve convenience for visitors and create a more pleasant cultural space.”
Songpa-gu’s project to develop the entire Seokchon Lake area into a cultural district is also progressing smoothly. Cafes and restaurants previously operated by the private sector have been transformed into ‘Cultural Experiment Space Lake’ and ‘Seokchon Lake Atelier,’ respectively, and have been provided as cultural spaces for residents since last year. In October, construction is scheduled to begin on the ‘Seokchon Lake Art Gallery (tentative name),’ a specialized visual arts cultural facility.
