[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] As the importance and value of personal information increase, the role of the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) is expanding, with the number of cases processed by the PIPC increasing by 20% last year.
The PIPC announced on the 30th that it has published the "2021 Personal Information Protection Annual Report," which contains the status and achievements of personal information protection policies over the past year.
According to the annual report published on this day, the number of cases processed by the PIPC last year was 502, an increase of 19.8% compared to 419 cases in 2019. In addition, ▲ the number of dispute mediation cases processed was 431, up 22.4% from 352 cases in 2019 ▲ the number of evaluations of personal information infringement factors in laws was 2,007, up 31.2% from 1,530 cases in 2019. Consultations at the Personal Information Infringement Reporting Center also increased by 11.4% to 177,457 cases last year from 159,255 cases in 2019, reflecting the public’s heightened awareness of personal information infringement.
Last year was a year in which the foundation for innovation in personal information protection systems suitable for the data economy was established, including the unification of personal information protection enforcement and supervision systems and the introduction of pseudonymous information systems, following the amendment of the three data-related laws (Personal Information Protection Act, Network Act, and Credit Information Act).
Key achievements include ▲ unification of personal information supervision and enforcement systems through the launch of the PIPC ▲ establishment of a safe data utilization foundation through the introduction of pseudonymous information ▲ preparation of strengthened personal information protection measures related to COVID-19 ▲ promotion of the second amendment of the Personal Information Protection Act to establish legislation suitable for the non-face-to-face and digital era.
Park Sang-hee, Secretary General of the PIPC, said, “We hope this annual report will contribute to enhancing the public’s understanding of personal information protection and utilization, and will be usefully referenced as a policy resource by government agencies.”
