[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Sumi] A story has been revealed in which a pedestrian crossing a crosswalk protested against a vehicle that attempted to enter late, only for the driver to report the pedestrian to the police instead.
On the 28th, a video titled "I tapped a car that dangerously entered with two fingers to protest, but the driver chased me and reported me, saying 'Why are you hitting the car?'" was uploaded on the YouTube channel 'Han Moon-cheol TV'.
According to Mr. A, who reported this video, around 6 p.m. on the 18th, he was crossing a crosswalk without traffic lights in Geumjeong-gu, Busan.
While Mr. A was about halfway through a one-lane one-way road, a vehicle tried to pass without stopping, so Mr. A tapped the vehicle with his finger. The driver then opened the driver's door and protested, saying, "Why are you hitting the car?"
The vehicle then illegally made a U-turn to follow Mr. A, again protesting, "Why are you hitting the car?" and reported him to 112 (police emergency number). In response, Mr. A also filed a complaint against the driver.
Mr. A stated, "I was born in 1964, and the other driver appeared to be in his 30s," adding, "I am older and tried to let it go quietly, but the driver, who violated the pedestrian protection duty at the crosswalk, did not realize his fault and continued threatening behavior by following me." He further added, "I just told him to go, but the driver insisted, saying 'When a car passes, the pedestrian must stop,' and would not relent, so I had no choice but to file a complaint at the police station."
Mr. A asked lawyer Han Moon-cheol about the applicability of the crime of intimidation against the driver and the violation of pedestrian protection duty at the crosswalk.
In response, lawyer Han said, "Violation of pedestrian protection duty at a crosswalk is obviously established," and added, "Since the driver partially crossed the center line to make a U-turn, whether to treat it as an illegal U-turn and center line violation remains to be seen."
However, lawyer Han believed it would be difficult to apply the crime of intimidation to the other driver. There is no evidence record of what the driver said, and if the driver simply chased to protest, it is hard to apply intimidation charges.
