Next Year, Health Insurance Premium Rate Rises 1.89%... Employees Pay an Average of 2,475 Won More per Month
[Asia Economy Reporter Seo So-jeong] Next year's health insurance premium rate will increase by 1.89% compared to this year. The average monthly premium for workplace subscribers will rise by 2,475 KRW to 133,087 KRW.
On the 26th, the Ministry of Health and Welfare held the Health Insurance Policy Deliberation Committee, the highest decision-making body for health insurance policy, and announced on the 27th that it decided to raise next year's health insurance premium rate by 1.89%. Accordingly, the premium rate for workplace subscribers will increase from the current 6.86% to 6.99% next year, and the amount per point for regional subscribers will rise from the current 201.5 KRW to 205.3 KRW next year.
Due to the adjustment of the health insurance premium rate, the average monthly premium (self-payment) for workplace subscribers next year will increase by 2,475 KRW from 130,612 KRW based on the June assessment this year to 133,087 KRW. The average monthly premium per household for regional subscribers will increase by 1,938 KRW from 102,775 KRW this year to 104,713 KRW.
This year's increase is lower than the government's target. The health insurance premium increase rates were 2.04% in 2018, 3.49% in 2019, 3.20% last year, and 2.89% this year. Previously, the government stated through the 1st National Health Insurance Comprehensive Plan that the health insurance premium rate could be raised by 3.49% from 2020 to 2022 and by 3.20% in 2023. However, due to the growing social and economic difficulties caused by COVID-19, the increase in health insurance premiums was minimized.

The Ministry of Health and Welfare explained, "Usually, the health insurance premium rate is decided through voting after coordinating opinions among committee members, but this time it was unanimously decided through social consensus among subscriber, provider, and public interest committee members without a vote," adding, "This decision considered the need for uninterrupted implementation of health insurance coverage measures during the COVID-19 situation and the continuous and effective response to infectious diseases."
