Is Yoon Hee-sook's Resignation a 'Masterstroke' or a 'Self-Defeating Move'?
A Lawmaker Under Real Estate Suspicion Makes a Bold Move to Resign
But Fatal Illegal Speculations Highlight the Need for Investigation

However, the issue seems to be shifting toward verifying Yoon’s involvement in speculation. This is why opinions coexist that Yoon’s bold move is either a masterstroke that elevates her political standing or a potential misstep that could backfire.
According to political circles on the 26th, the possibility of Yoon’s resignation being approved by the National Assembly is considered very low. The National Assembly approves resignation requests by a vote, requiring a majority of the total members present and a majority vote in favor. Yoon stated the day before her resignation announcement, “It is hard to expect the Democratic Party to approve it.” However, given the public’s intense focus on Yoon, the Democratic Party cannot ignore the potential backlash of supporting her resignation. No matter how it is handled, it could only serve to raise Yoon’s political profile. This is why her move is seen as a masterstroke that allows her to show responsibility while retaining her seat.
There is also criticism within the People Power Party that Yoon’s bold move limits the options of fellow lawmakers facing similar situations. One lawmaker, who was asked by the party to clarify allegations related to real estate, said in a phone interview, “If there are shortcomings, they can be explained in detail. There is no need to take the extreme step of resigning.”
Some view Yoon’s immediate decision to resign, rather than the usual approach of clarifying allegations during the upcoming government joint special investigation, as indicative of unavoidable illegal activities. The Democratic Party has immediately demanded a thorough investigation into Yoon’s involvement in speculation. The allegations surrounding Yoon mainly fall into two categories: the possibility that Yoon used development information obtained while working at the Korea Development Institute (KDI) related to his father’s land purchase in Sejong City, and the suspicion that Yoon’s brother-in-law, who was a close aide to Choi Kyung-hwan, the powerful Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Strategy and Finance during the Park Geun-hye administration, had advantageous access to related information.
In this regard, at the Democratic Party’s policy coordination meeting that day, lawmaker Kim Sung-hwan referred to it as a “Yoon resignation show,” saying, “How many people would believe that an 80-year-old father would farm land with no ties and spend his remaining years there?” He urged a thorough investigation based on these suspicions. Lawmaker Park Joo-min also said, “Many suspicions have been raised about the process of the father’s land purchase,” and added, “The People Power Party leadership, which claimed the suspicions were resolved with a simple explanation, must fully disclose what that simple explanation entails.” The camp of Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jae-myung also criticized, “If she intends to resign, she should submit her resignation to the Speaker of the National Assembly. This is nothing but a show about resignation.” Presidential candidate Kim Doo-kwan called for a full investigation into real estate speculation at KDI. Independent lawmaker Yang Yi-won-young, who left the Democratic Party after the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission’s full investigation of Democratic lawmakers, held a press conference that day, saying, “I was almost fooled by this resignation show,” and criticized, “She says she will resign but leaves the decision to the Democratic Party.”

Ultimately, Yoon’s extreme move to resign could backfire if a link is found showing she played a specific role in her father’s land purchase. Conversely, if no such link is found, she could seize the opportunity to maintain her seat and emerge as a prominent opposition politician. The results announced by the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission have been passed on to the special investigation team. According to the Commission, the investigation will proceed regardless of whether she resigns.
