Park Beom-gye: "Jeong Jin-ung's 'Transfer' Personnel Action is Appropriate and Justified"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Daehyun] Park Beom-gye, Minister of Justice, evaluated the transfer of Deputy Chief Prosecutor Jeong Jin-ung of the Ulsan District Prosecutors' Office as an "appropriate and reasonable measure."
On the 20th, Minister Park, while arriving at the Ministry of Justice Government Gwacheon Complex in the morning, told reporters regarding Deputy Chief Prosecutor Jeong's transfer, "Considering the nature of the case, its progress, and the degree of controversy, this is the most appropriate and reasonable measure."
The day before, the Ministry of Justice announced that Deputy Chief Prosecutor Jeong would be appointed as a research fellow at the main branch of the Judicial Research and Training Institute effective the 23rd. Deputy Chief Prosecutor Jeong was recently sentenced in the first trial to 4 months imprisonment with a 1-year probation and a 1-year disqualification on charges of assaulting Chief Prosecutor Han Dong-hoon during a search and seizure process (official assault).
On the same day, Minister Park explained, "We compared the nature of past cases involving prosecutor misconduct that were investigated and prosecuted with the case involving Prosecutor Jeong Jin-ung," adding, "We thought it appropriate to exclude him from frontline investigative command, so we took such measures."
Meanwhile, regarding the recent mass refugee occurrence following the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan, Minister Park stated, "The Ministry of Justice, responsible for immigration and foreigner policies, has been closely monitoring the situation for a long time," and "We are preparing for various scenarios and always prioritizing national interests with close preparation." However, he added, "At present, since this is a global issue, not just a problem for the Republic of Korea, I speak cautiously."
