[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Seoul City announced on the 19th that it will hold the ‘18th Energy Day’ campaign on the 20th to promote energy-saving practices.
This Energy Day event, organized by the Energy Citizens’ Coalition, will be held simultaneously in 11 cities and provinces nationwide and will be conducted online (YouTube) without face-to-face meetings due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic. Energy Day was established in 2004 to encourage all citizens to participate in energy saving every August 22, commemorating the day on August 22, 2003, when Korea recorded its highest-ever electricity consumption.
Energy Day, under the theme ‘Turn off the lights and turn on the stars,’ will hold a blackout event for 5 minutes starting at 9 p.m. and a campaign to raise air conditioner set temperatures by 2 degrees for 1 hour starting at 2 p.m. Major buildings in Seoul, including Seoul City Hall, Seoul Metropolitan Government-affiliated institutions, district offices, public institutions, Sungnyemun, Gwanghwamun, Deoksugung Palace, the National Assembly Building, 63 Square, Lotte World, and the Seoul Arts Center, will participate in the blackout for 5 minutes starting at 9 p.m.
Additionally, as part of the campaign to maintain appropriate air conditioner temperatures (26?28 degrees Celsius), energy-intensive buildings and commercial facilities will participate by turning off air conditioners or raising the set temperature by 2 degrees for 1 hour starting at 2 p.m.
Furthermore, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., when electricity demand is high, 23 major Seoul facilities, including the Arisu Water Purification Center and Water Recycling Center, plan to reduce power consumption by 6,985 kW.
The Energy Day campaign involves energy-saving organizations and apartment complexes, including 123 elementary, middle, and high schools registered in the Energy Guardian Angels group, about 190 energy self-reliant villages, and 14 carbon-neutral citizen practice projects, all participating in the blackout and setting appropriate air conditioner temperatures.
The blackout event can be viewed live by searching ‘Energy Day’ on YouTube, and it is also available for real-time viewing on social media platforms such as Energy Day’s Facebook, Instagram, and Band.
Citizens wishing to participate in Energy Day can join by clicking ‘Participate’ on the Starlight Keeper section of the Energy Day website and can engage in climate crisis response activities such as the ‘Carbon Neutral National Practice is the Answer’ slogan event, which includes a screenshot certification event during the Energy Day blackout ceremony.
