Hyundai Department Store Group Launches Korea's Largest 'Carbon Neutral Forest' Project
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] Hyundai Department Store Group announced on the 18th that it will join hands with the Korea Forest Service to create the country's largest-scale 'Carbon Neutral Forest.' The Carbon Neutral Forest is a forest established to reabsorb carbon dioxide emitted through daily life and industrial activities, and it is a project jointly promoted by the Korea Forest Service along with private companies and civic groups.
On the 20th, Hyundai Department Store Group will sign a business agreement with the Korea Forest Service to promote carbon neutrality activities, including the creation of the Carbon Neutral Forest, and to strengthen ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management. Through this agreement, they plan to jointly carry out afforestation projects with the Korea Forest Service and also support international carbon neutrality events and eco-friendly activities. Additionally, they will conduct related projects such as discovering indicators of carbon reduction effects resulting from the creation of the Carbon Neutral Forest and actively cooperate in building networks with domestic and international institutions possessing government and specialized forestry technologies.
The Carbon Neutral Forest created by Hyundai Department Store Group will cover up to 33 hectares (approximately 100,000 pyeong), with plans to plant about 100,000 trees by 2025. Hyundai Department Store Group and the Korea Forest Service will select the forest creation area and tree species within this year, and starting next year, they plan to develop an experiential forest centered around Hyundai Livart, a Hyundai Department Store Group affiliate.
Hyundai Department Store Group will regularize tree planting and forest care events for carbon neutrality involving customers and employees, and continuously introduce customer-participation social contribution content such as experiential education programs that raise awareness of the value of forests and the importance of carbon neutrality activities.
