The county has had cases in 2018 where high water temperatures caused significant damage to shellfish aquaculture farms, so every year it educates fishermen on how to manage aquaculture farms in preparation for high water temperatures and strengthens fishery monitoring activities.
Especially this year, as the sea temperature rose 4 to 7℃ higher than the previous year, 2,837 shading nets were provided to 179 fishing households in 10 eup and myeon fishing cooperatives, and liquefied oxygen was supplied to land-based aquaculture farms.
In the agricultural sector, pest control was supported for irrigation wells and water facilities and 2,534 farms (1,368 hectares), while in the livestock sector, stress relievers for livestock were provided: 1,513 units to 4 Hanwoo cattle farms, 492 units to 42 goat farms, along with support for fans and waterers to prepare for the heatwave.
A fisherman engaged in cage aquaculture said, “I am grateful that the county has shown great interest by not only providing project funds but also visiting the site to prevent damage from high water temperatures. Although we are striving to prevent damage by using liquefied oxygen, the project funds are insufficient compared to demand, so I hope the county secures additional funds.”
A farmer cultivating Redhyang in a facility house said, “When the high temperature period continues in summer, excessive transpiration adversely affects plant vigor and quality. The multi-layer thermal curtains distributed by the county reduce heating costs in winter and effectively block sunlight to lower temperatures in summer. I hope the county actively discovers pilot projects for facility cultivation farms in the future.”
Wando-gun Governor Shin Woo-cheol, who is visiting agriculture, fisheries, and livestock sites to reflect residents’ voices in county administration, said, “I am sorry to know that hardships are very great due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic combined with the heatwave and high water temperatures. I ask residents to pay special attention and caution to prevent damage, and the county will also prepare thoroughly.”
