'Material' Science Museum in Gwangyang, Jeonnam, and 'Aerospace' Specialized Science Museum in Jinju, Gyeongnam
Ministry of Science and ICT to Announce Selection Results on the 12th
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-su] Specialized science museums related to materials and aerospace, each funded with a budget of 40 billion KRW, will be established in Gwangyang City, Jeollanam-do, and Jinju City, Gyeongsangnam-do.
The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 12th that it has selected Gwangyang City (materials) in Jeollanam-do and Jinju City (aerospace) in Gyeongsangnam-do as new locations for public specialized science museums in the fields of materials and aerospace to expand opportunities for enjoying science culture and to nurture future talents in core technology sectors.
These regions will build specialized science museums in each field over the next five years with a total investment of 40 billion KRW. The Ministry of Science and ICT will support 50% of the construction costs and participate in the planning process, including establishing basic plans and organizing exhibition programs.
The Ministry of Science and ICT issued a recruitment announcement last May, and it is known that both Gwangyang City and Jinju City applied independently under the recommendation of their respective metropolitan local governments. The Ministry stated the selection reason as, "We focused on whether the region’s unique industries and characteristics are linked with the science museum so that it can serve as a science culture hub representing the area."
Gwangyang City, adjacent to major industrial complexes such as Pohang Steelworks, is a center for the materials, parts, and equipment industry. It plans to establish a specialized science museum in the materials field that offers differentiated professional programs connected to the Gwangyang Bay industrial zone and develop it as a regional landmark in conjunction with the creation of a children's theme park.
Jinju City, home to Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), is building its status as a center for the aerospace industry. It plans to construct a specialized science museum in the aerospace field that will serve as a central cultural facility in the city center, harmonizing with museums, libraries, and other institutions.
