Japan's Cumulative COVID-19 Cases Surpass 1 Million... Sharp Increase Continues
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The cumulative number of COVID-19 cases in Japan has surpassed 1 million.
According to NHK on the 6th (local time), as of 6:30 PM that day, the number of newly confirmed COVID-19 cases in Japan reached 15,645, including 4,515 cases in Tokyo alone. For the fourth consecutive day, the number of confirmed cases exceeded 10,000, and the number of cases on this day was the highest recorded in a single day.
As a result, the cumulative number of confirmed cases exceeded 1,002,805, surpassing 1 million. This occurred about 1 year and 7 months after the first official patient was reported in January last year.
The Japanese government is responding with emergency measures to reduce the floating population, but is struggling as the Delta variant spreads. Additionally, with the Tokyo Olympics underway, the spread appears to be intensifying further.
The upward trend in confirmed cases is becoming steeper. It took 6 weeks for the cumulative infections to increase from 700,000 to 800,000, 4 weeks to exceed 900,000, and only 8 days to surpass 1 million again.
