This is because Honorary Chairman Chung became the inductee of the world's most prestigious "Automotive Hall of Fame." He is the first Korean to take a seat alongside renowned past inductees such as Walter Chrysler, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, and Karl Benz.
At the induction ceremony held in Detroit on the 22nd (local time), Chung Euisun, Chairman of Hyundai Motor Group, attended as the recipient on behalf of his elderly father. Although Honorary Chairman Chung was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in February last year, the official event was delayed due to COVID-19. Along with Chairman Chung, his daughter-in-law Chung Jiseon, Chung Sung-yi, advisor of Innocean, Seon Doohun, chairman of Younghoon Medical Foundation, Chung Taeyoung, vice chairman of Hyundai Card and Hyundai Capital, Chung Myung-i, president of Hyundai Card and Hyundai Capital brand division, and Chung Yoon-i, president of Haevichi Hotel & Resort, all traveled to the U.S. to celebrate their father's award.
Chairman Chung received the Hall of Fame induction commemorative plaque from K.C. Crane, publisher of Automotive News, who presented the award. In his proxy induction speech, Chairman Chung described Honorary Chairman Chung as "a person who loved automobiles all his life," emphasizing that "he grew Hyundai Motor Group from a company with no presence into a global automotive enterprise." He expressed respect by saying, "My father overcame numerous crises and challenges, fulfilled the dream of founder Chung Ju-yung to enter the global market with an independent brand, and devoted his life to making Hyundai Motor Group a company that employees, customers, and dealers are proud of."

On this day, the Automotive Hall of Fame highlighted Honorary Chairman Chung’s major management activities in a tribute video produced and screened by the Hall, including Kia’s successful turnaround, construction of global plants including in the U.S., quality inspections of domestic and overseas plants, and globalization of research and development (R&D). The video also showed Honorary Chairman Chung’s warm personality in encouraging employees both at home and abroad.
Honorary Chairman Chung is recognized as a business leader who elevated Hyundai Motor Group into the global "Top 5" in an unprecedentedly short period in automotive history and is regarded as a key figure in the development of South Korea’s economy and automotive industry. He led the acquisition of Kia, which turned a profit in the first year after acquisition, and launched the first and only automotive group in Korea with a passion for quality and technological independence, dramatically growing the automotive parts and materials industry centered on automobiles. "Quality management" is Honorary Chairman Chung’s trademark. The "10-year/100,000-mile" warranty card introduced in the U.S. market based on high quality became a turning point that established Hyundai Motor Group as a global powerhouse.
Despite opposition, his swift establishment of a production network on every continent except Africa proved to be a masterstroke. He established a standardized plant construction system that enabled the timely building of uniformly high-quality production plants worldwide and practiced "on-site management," personally visiting sites around the world to identify and solve problems, which remains a legacy of Honorary Chairman Chung. His commitment to co-growth with partners during overseas expansion is also a result of his dedication to mutual development. John Krafcik, former CEO of Hyundai Motor America, recalled, "Honorary Chairman Chung made all employees confident in pursuing the goal of becoming the highest quality automotive company. He focused on the product and paid great attention to ensuring all vehicles had excellent quality and safety."
Above all, Honorary Chairman Chung is evaluated as a challenger who constantly pursues the future, seizes opportunities with a different perspective, and breaks through decisively. The hydrogen business, where Hyundai currently stands out, is a decision that highlights Honorary Chairman Chung’s insight into the essence. Recognizing the potential of hydrogen energy as important, he encouraged development even when other companies gave up, successfully mass-producing the world’s first hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. He also led the advancement of the domestic materials industry by building an integrated steel mill producing steel, known as the "rice" of the industry. Sonny Perdue, former governor of Georgia, expressed respect, saying, "Honorary Chairman Chung has grown many companies not only in the automotive field but also in steel and construction, creating numerous jobs and economic value. It is a very impressive and remarkable achievement."
