Korea GM Union Secures 'Right to Strike'
[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] The Korean GM (GM) labor union has secured the right to engage in legal industrial actions such as strikes.
According to industry sources on the 19th, the Central Labor Relations Commission judged that it was difficult to propose a mediation plan due to significant differences between labor and management in the wage negotiation dispute adjustment related to Korean GM, and decided to suspend the mediation.
Following this decision by the Central Labor Relations Commission, Korean GM has secured the authority to legally carry out industrial actions such as strikes.
The Korean GM labor union received 76.5% approval in a strike vote conducted among all union members from the 1st to the 5th.
Korean GM labor and management have held 12 rounds of collective wage negotiations since May, but the gap between the two sides remains wide.
The union demanded a fixed monthly base pay increase of 99,000 won and a lump-sum payment of over 10 million won including performance bonuses and incentives.
The union is known to plan to decide on the method of struggle through additional negotiations with management.
