Lee Jae-myung to Visit Site of Dormitory Cleaning Worker’s Death at Seoul National University on the 11th
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Lee Jae-myung, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, will visit the site where a cleaning worker died at the dormitory of Seoul National University in Gwanak-gu, Seoul, around 3:30 PM on the 11th.
A spokesperson for Governor Lee stated, "He is scheduled to visit Building 925 of the Gwanak Student Residence Hall at Seoul National University between 3:30 PM and 4 PM on the 11th."
Earlier, on the 8th, Lee posted on Facebook a message titled "No one is born to suffer in this world," saying, "(Regarding the death of cleaning worker Lee at Seoul National University) I hope the news reports are not true," and expressed anger, stating, "Seeing the photo of Lee’s answer sheet, written crookedly while taking an exam unrelated to his work, brings a burning sensation to my throat."
He continued, "I believe many citizens, upon seeing this news, do not see it as someone else’s problem," and added, "We all live enduring various injustices and humiliations, thinking of our families at home and worrying about immediate livelihoods, 'nevertheless.'"
In particular, he diagnosed, "(This incident) is not just the problem of a single malicious manager," but rather "a deeply rooted dual structure of labor, a workplace where people can treat others carelessly, and a structural problem of society that allows this."
He further stated, "Even 40 years ago, when I worked in a factory, I might have been hit a few times, but I was never made to feel such humiliation," calling it "a sorrowful scene of a society with continued low growth and scarce opportunities."
Governor Lee also reflected, "It is election season, and I am thinking about the reason for politics to exist," adding, "Not everyone can become rich and enjoy glory, but none of us were born into this world just to endure. I will make sure to achieve a world where no one suffers, a great society where the strong protect the weak. I offer my condolences to the deceased and hope the truth is uncovered and clear measures are taken."
Earlier, the National Democratic General Labor Union held a recent press conference condemning Seoul National University for neglecting the poor working conditions of cleaning workers and forcing them to take exams unrelated to their duties, accusing the university of abuse of power.
