The eco-friendly seasoned laver ‘Yangban Deulgireum Gim Eco Package,’ which removes the plastic container used to protect the contents from external shocks, has sold over 5 million packs in the one year since its launch in July last year. By removing the plastic container and reducing the packaging volume, the ‘Yangban Deulgireum Gim Eco Package’ cut packaging waste such as vinyl and paper boxes to about one-third of the previous amount.
Through this, Dongwon F&B achieved an annual reduction of about 27 tons of plastic and approximately 110 tons of paper waste. This amount corresponds to about 1.93 million 500ml Dongwon Samul PET bottles and about 22 million A4 sheets of paper, respectively.
The ‘Yangban Deulgireum Gim Eco Package’ was the first domestic seasoned laver product to introduce ‘laser cutting film,’ which solved the problem of the laver tearing along with the packaging when opened. The ‘laser cutting film’ is packaging material made by creating small holes on the film surface with a high-temperature laser to form perforated lines for easy tearing. It was developed through over two years of research with Dongwon Systems, Dongwon Group’s comprehensive packaging company.
Dongwon F&B is expanding its eco-friendly products by recently launching the ‘Yangban Premium Gim Eco Package,’ which applies eco-packaging to other items in the ‘Yangban Gim’ line. As part of its ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management, Dongwon F&B plans to gradually expand the seasoned laver eco-package lineup, aiming to reduce about 200 tons of plastic annually by 2023.
Meanwhile, Dongwon F&B declared its ESG management in June and established an ESG committee and a dedicated task force. This year, it introduced the label-free bottled water ‘Dongwon Samul Labelfree,’ which removes labels from the PET bottle body and cap, and the label-free tea beverage ‘Eco Bori.’ Since last year, it has been operating the eco-friendly frozen water cooling material ‘Dongwon Samul Fresh.’ Within this year, it plans to expand the operation of ‘No Plastic’ gift sets that completely eliminate plastic packaging.
