Jinwon Life Sciences Publishes Commentary on COVID-19 Vaccine Development in International Academic Journal
[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Hyowon] GeneOne Life Science announced on the 5th that it published a commentary in an international academic journal stating that antibodies formed after infection with common cold coronaviruses can be detected by COVID-19 antibody serological tests, so careful selection of antigens is necessary.
GeneOne Life Science stated that this commentary was published in the online edition dated the 1st of the international scientific journal Translational Medicine Communications. Dr. Ka Mutumani, Chief Scientific Development Officer of GeneOne Life Science, is the first author, with Research Director Jeong Moonseop and Chief Medical Officer Joel Meslo participating as co-authors.
The published commentary explains that antibodies formed by common cold coronaviruses can also be detected by existing COVID-19 antibody serological tests, which may lead to an overestimation of seroprevalence. Therefore, careful selection of target antigens for COVID-19 antibody serological tests is necessary.
In the paper, Dr. Ka Mutumani explained, “Among antibodies formed from previous common cold coronavirus infections, antibodies against the S2 subunit of the spike antigen may partially prevent COVID-19 virus infection, but they can also induce antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE), which may worsen symptoms.”
He added, “To more accurately determine COVID-19 seroprevalence and effectively respond to the COVID-19 pandemic through vaccine development and distribution, it is necessary to change the target antigens of existing antibody serological tests to antigens specific to the COVID-19 virus, minimizing the effects of cross-reactive antibodies caused by common cold coronaviruses.”
