‘Alpha’ and ‘Delta’ Highly Transmissible Variant Viruses Trigger Emergency in Busan... 21 Infections Reported Within a Week

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Highly contagious variant viruses, including the India-originated Delta variant, are spreading rapidly in Busan, causing health authorities to be on high alert.
Busan City announced on the 30th that there were 21 newly confirmed variant virus infections reported by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency over the past week.
Among the 21 infected individuals, 15 were infected with the Delta variant, and 6 with the UK-originated Alpha variant.
The Alpha variant cases are all presumed to be local infections, including 3 related to cluster infections and 3 individual infections. The Delta variant cases were inbound travelers from two foreign countries.
The number of Delta variant infections in Busan has rapidly increased since it was first confirmed in a foreigner who entered from Indonesia on the 23rd.
So far, the total number of variant infections in Busan stands at 104, including 82 Alpha variant cases, 16 Delta variant cases, and 6 Beta variant cases.

A Busan health authority official stated, “Regarding the infection types, the Delta variant is generally imported from overseas and then spreads locally, so we are closely monitoring the situation.”
