[AK Opinion Poll] D-1 Before Presidential Election Declaration, Yoon Seok-yeol Widens Gap with Lee Jae-myung
8.2%P Lead, 1%P Greater Difference Than 2 Weeks Ago
Candidate Selection Requires This, Showing Trend of Support Rate Dispersion
[Asia Economy reporters Naju-seok and Jeon Jin-young] In a hypothetical matchup between the leading presidential candidates from the ruling and opposition parties, former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol and Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jae-myung, Yoon's lead has further strengthened. Yoon will officially declare his presidential bid on the 29th, and Lee will do so on the 1st of next month.
According to a public opinion poll commissioned by Asia Economy to Win-G Korea Consulting, conducted from the 26th to 27th among 1,009 voters nationwide aged 18 and over (100% mobile phone virtual numbers, automated response), the gap in a hypothetical one-on-one contest between the two was 8.2 percentage points, with former Yoon leading beyond the margin of error. This gap widened from 7.2 percentage points in the same institution’s poll conducted two weeks earlier on the 12th and 13th.
Comparing the polls from the 12th-13th and 26th-27th, former Yoon’s support rose slightly from 48.4% to 48.7%, an increase of 0.3 percentage points. Lee’s support declined from 41.1% to 40.5%, a drop of 0.6 percentage points.
When examining candidate suitability within the ruling and opposition camps separately, the dominance of leading candidates appeared to weaken. In the poll asking who is suitable as the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, Lee, ranked first and second, recorded 34.7%, and former Democratic Party leader Lee Nak-yeon recorded 13.8%. Their combined support was 48.5%, down from 50% (Lee 35.4%, Lee Nak-yeon 14.6%) in the poll conducted on the 12th-13th.
Within the conservative opposition candidates, former Yoon’s momentum somewhat stalled. This indicates that voter preferences have dispersed as other candidates gained presence, with no clear distinction between ruling and opposition camps. Yoon’s support in the conservative opposition dropped by 3.8 percentage points to 31.6%. Notably, Hong Joon-pyo, who rejoined the People Power Party, saw his support rise by 4.7 percentage points to 13.8%. The approval rating of Choi Jae-hyung, the head of the Board of Audit and Inspection who announced his resignation on the 28th, also increased by 1.8 percentage points to 5.4%.
