Samsung Display Reduces 110,000 Tons of Greenhouse Gases Last Year with Low-Power Technology
[Asia Economy Reporter Suyeon Woo] Samsung Display is contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions through low-power OLED technology.
Samsung Display announced on the 21st that the total power consumption of OLED panels for smartphones, laptops, and smartwatches produced last year decreased by 239 GWh, about 30% of the consumption in 2017. This is equivalent to reducing 110,000 tons of greenhouse gases and matches the amount of carbon absorbed by a pine forest covering approximately 17 million trees over an area equivalent to about 5,600 soccer fields.
Producing about 400 million OLED units annually, Samsung Display also achieved greenhouse gas reduction effects of 40,000 tons and 80,000 tons in 2018 and 2019 respectively compared to 2017. Behind these achievements lies Samsung Display’s unique low-power OLED technology.
Samsung Display has contributed to lowering the power consumption of panels used in smartphones and laptops by annually introducing OLED organic materials with improved luminous efficiency. Additionally, it succeeded in developing 'Adaptive Frequency (variable refresh rate)', which reduces power consumption by adjusting the refresh rate according to the user's content, upgrading low-power OLED technology to the next level.
A Samsung Display official stated, "The power consumption of electronic devices, especially mobile devices, is a very important issue not only in terms of user convenience but also in terms of global warming," adding, "We plan to continue research and development on low-power and eco-friendly technologies for sustainable product manufacturing."
