Three Remaining Challenges in Front of the Blackened Coupang Building...
Logistics Center Safety Issues Emerge as Core Competency
Embarrassed by Growing Negative Public Opinion over 'Coupang Withdrawal'
Delivery Disruptions Expected Due to Deokpyeong Logistics Center Gap
The fire at the Deokpyeong Logistics Center in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province has put the brakes on Coupang, which had been accelerating its growth. Since its U.S. listing this year, Coupang has focused on investing in domestic logistics centers and creating jobs through these investments, but the fire has exposed vulnerabilities in logistics center fire safety, making a comprehensive reassessment inevitable. With the Deokpyeong Logistics Center, the heart of the metropolitan area's 'Rocket Delivery,' completely destroyed, the fast delivery that Coupang touted as a strength is also expected to face disruptions. The negative public sentiment spreading due to the fire and the death of a firefighter is also causing difficulties for Coupang.
On the 21st, Coupang announced that it would conduct special inspections of all logistics centers and business sites to find ways to improve fire prevention. It also pledged to actively cooperate with the investigation into the cause of the fire and to make additional improvements if necessary based on the investigation results.
◆ Safety Issues at Logistics Centers, a Core Competency, Surface = However, industry insiders see the fire raising concerns about safety management at logistics centers as a significant blow to Coupang. Logistics centers have been a core competency where Coupang has concentrated its investments. This year alone, following its U.S. listing, Coupang announced logistics center investment plans in Jeollabuk-do in March, Gyeongsangnam-do in April, Chungcheongbuk-do in May, and recently in Busan. The cumulative announced investment exceeds 1.02 trillion KRW, and the company emphasized that the job creation effect through direct employment reaches about 9,500 people.
If safety management issues at Coupang’s logistics centers are revealed during the investigation into the fire’s cause, the effects of the investments made so far could be undermined. Coupang explained that it hired an additional 700 safety specialists within a year and invested over 250 billion KRW in safety management, but this fire has cast a shadow over those efforts.
◆ Coupang Embarrassed by Negative Public Opinion Spreading with 'Coupang Withdrawal' = The spread of negative public opinion, including withdrawal and boycott movements after the fire, is also causing embarrassment for Coupang. On social media, posts certifying withdrawal from using Coupang are continuing. Analysts say that consumers who had concerns about Coupang’s handling of deaths among delivery and logistics center workers have now taken action following this fire.
Coincidentally, on the day of the fire, founder Kim Beom-seok announced his resignation as chairman of Coupang’s board and as a registered director, which added fuel to the public sentiment. Although Coupang explained that this was a matter resolved at the shareholders’ meeting, there were repeated criticisms that the resignation was influenced by the Serious Accident Punishment Act. Coupang quickly announced support plans for the bereaved family of the late firefighter Kim Dong-sik, who died during fire suppression, the establishment of a scholarship fund, and the normal payment of salaries to Deokpyeong Logistics Center employees, but the negative public opinion has not easily subsided.
◆ Delivery Disruptions Expected Due to Deokpyeong Logistics Center Gap = The immediate challenge Coupang must address is the emergency situation in metropolitan area deliveries caused by the gap left by the Deokpyeong Logistics Center. Coupang stated that the volume handled by the Deokpyeong Logistics Center affected by the fire is being shared by other centers to minimize customer inconvenience due to delays in order deliveries.

However, unlike last year when a logistics center was closed due to a COVID-19 outbreak, it is expected to take considerable time to restore the existing logistics center system. There are concerns that other logistics centers, which will have to handle the dispersed volume, may become overloaded. An industry official said, "With over 100 proprietary logistics and delivery centers in more than 30 cities nationwide, Coupang’s continued investment in these centers has been a core competitive advantage. The safety issues at logistics centers imply cracks in that competitiveness, so emergency management is expected to continue for the time being."
