President Moon's Approval Rating Rises for 4 Consecutive Weeks, Approaching 40% [Gallup]
Korea Gallup June 2nd Week Survey, Positive Rating 39% vs Negative Rating 52%
[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Ju-yeon] A public opinion poll revealed that President Moon Jae-in's approval rating for his administration has risen for four consecutive weeks, approaching the 40% mark. The most cited reason for positive evaluation was the response to the COVID-19 vaccine.
On the 11th, Gallup Korea conducted a survey from the 8th to the 10th targeting 1,003 adults aged 18 and over nationwide to evaluate President Moon Jae-in's job performance. The results showed that 39% responded positively with "doing well," an increase of 1 percentage point from the previous survey. Negative evaluations of "doing poorly" decreased by 1 percentage point to 52%. The rest withheld their opinion (neutral 3%, don't know/refused 6%).
President Moon's approval rating has been on the rise for four consecutive weeks since recording 32% in the second week of May. By age group, only those in their 40s showed a higher positive evaluation than negative. The approval rating among people in their 40s was the highest at 53%, followed by 28% in their 20s (ages 18-29), 42% in their 30s, 41% in their 50s, and 32% for those aged 60 and above.
By party affiliation, 79% of supporters of the Democratic Party of Korea evaluated the president's job performance positively, while 90% of People Power Party supporters responded negatively. Among those without a current party affiliation, the negative rate was also higher (positive 24%, negative 56%). By political orientation, the positive job performance rating was 66% among progressives, 38% among moderates, and 17% among conservatives.
Regarding the reasons for positive evaluation of President Moon's job performance, "COVID-19 response" was cited the most at 31%. This was followed by "diplomacy and international relations" (15%), "doing his best/working hard" (6%), and "overall good performance," "expansion of welfare," and "considering the people's position" (all 4%).
